South Shore Marine – Tom Mack, president
Q: Give us an example of a business challenge your organization faced, as well as how you overcame it.
From 2007 and 2009, the marine industry along with many recreational products experienced dealer failures between 30 percent and 40 percent. We stayed focused on service, customer relationships, and most importantly, started a “rescue boat” program purchasing bank owned units to be made like new again. Adversity brings opportunity.
Q: In what ways are you an innovative leader, and how does your organization employ innovation to be on the leading edge?
While many have cut back on marketing and customer events, we only increased our online presence, and maintained strong positions at shows and with customer events. We invest heavily to meet new customers online resulting in approximately half of all boat sales out of state.
Q: What is the greatest lesson you’ve learned and how have you applied it?
Define and understand your mission, communicate it to the team – and remain faithful to that plan. Do it right; do the right thing; and remain relentless in your efforts.
Q: How does your organization make a significant impact on the community and regional economy?
We consider our interactions and relationships meaningful – and our service to others creates economic impact on a local and regional economy.
